90 Degree Elbow Pipe: Complete Specification and Application Guide
Understanding 90 Degree Elbow Fittings
The 90 degree elbow is one of the most fundamental and widely used pipe fittings in industrial piping systems. This simple yet critical component changes the direction of flow by 90 degrees, enabling piping systems to navigate around obstacles, connect equipment, and optimize layout efficiency.
With over 30 years of manufacturing experience, Songhai Flange produces 90 degree elbows to ASME, DIN, JIS, and GB standards in sizes from 1/2″ to 72″ and all pressure classes.
Types of 90 Degree Elbows
Long Radius (LR) 90 Degree Elbow
Long radius elbows have a center-to-end dimension of 1.5 times the nominal pipe size (1.5D). This gentler bend radius provides:
- Lower pressure drop and turbulence
- Reduced erosion at the elbow outer radius
- Better flow characteristics for slurries and viscous fluids
- Less stress on the piping system
Standard: ASME B16.9 specifies LR elbows as the default type.
Short Radius (SR) 90 Degree Elbow
Short radius elbows have a center-to-end dimension equal to the nominal pipe size (1.0D). These are used when:
- Space constraints prevent LR elbow installation
- Lower cost is a priority
- Flow characteristics are less critical
Note: SR elbows create higher pressure drop and should be avoided in high-velocity or erosive service.
Butt Weld 90 Degree Elbow
Butt weld elbows are beveled at both ends for full penetration welding to pipe. This is the most common type for industrial applications:
- Permanent, leak-proof connection
- Smooth internal flow path
- Suitable for all pressure and temperature ranges
Socket Weld 90 Degree Elbow
Socket weld elbows have recessed ends for small pipe insertion and fillet welding:
- Used for pipes 2″ and smaller
- Easier alignment during installation
- Lower welding skill requirement
Threaded 90 Degree Elbow
Threaded elbows have female NPT threads for screw-on installation:
- No welding required
- Easy installation and removal
- Galvanized versions common for water service
